March is the month where we celebrate many things including Mother's Day and International Women's Day so I thought it appropriate to feature some inspiring mums and we'll be showcasing them throughout March - hope you enjoy the "March of Inspiring Mums" series!
Today's interview is with Andrea Buckle, a mum of 3 children from Pembrokeshire, South West Wales. She tells us why she left her successful corporate career and chose to move 250 miles away to follow her dreams, live by the beach and set up her business, Peachy Packages. Read her story below and why she also likes to do random acts of kindness.
Peachy Packages is a subscription box company providing beautifully curated monthly collections of premium stationery, useful inspired gifts, delicious organic tea and scrumptious luxury chocolate so it seemed a fitting tribute to share Adnrea's story on International Day of Happiness (20th March).
1. Tell me a little about yourself and how you got into the job you’re now doing?
I started my own business because of a change in lifestyle that's given me the opportunity to do something different. I chose to begin Peachy Packages partly because I love all the things I'm including in them, I love buying gifts and I love finding things that are useful and practical as well as beautiful and interesting. But also because the business model appeals and I love a challenge and to be constantly learning something new.
It's been over a year now since I left my full time corporate career as a senior manager running a Pricing & Licensing team, but also being a single mum who juggled three kids at secondary, primary and nursery and always did so much. I made the most of life and wasn't unhappy but was always so busy. During 2016 I took a massive life changing decision and upped sticks from the city, gave up the awesome job I loved and we moved 250 miles to the country, near beaches and family, with smaller schools and a fabulous community. I'm proof that you can follow your heart and make your dreams a reality! And I'm so happy I made the leap. My time is now filled with activities I choose to do, more quality time with my awesome children and my super supportive family and friends, while building a business that I enjoy in a location that I adore.
As to why I started this business, well it's because I've been there, always rushing about, wishing I'd remembered to pick up this or that, never finding the time to make life admin more bearable and often failing to make time for my own self-care in the process. Self care is such an important aspect that is often put on a back burner and I'd love to inspire more people to build it into their to-do list! I also like to encourage people to reach for their dreams and by providing items that they can use to begin planning what actions they need to take, their dreams can become a step closer to a plan.
So Peachy Packages are for all you busy folk, who like quality items, who will enjoy the beautiful useful stationery and inspired gifts, who need to be reminded that self-care is important, or who could do with a guilt free treat. The packages are also perfect as a gift and will save you time and effort hunting round for something different.
Tell me one interesting fact about you?
I like to do random acts of kindness. These could be anything from complimenting someone I see in the street to providing help when its least expected. The beauty comes when the realisation hits that there is nothing expected in return.
Please can you share 3 tips for managing the juggle of motherhood, life and business?
1) As a parent, graciously accept help that is offered. There are plenty of people who understand the struggle and are more than happy to give support when you need it. Don’t feel guilty; you are still doing your best. You’ll soon learn what things you can’t stand others doing for you and what things you’re so grateful that someone else can do for you. And sometimes it takes the most courage ever to admit you need help, try not to be afraid of asking for it.
2) In life, make time for yourself. You can’t be everything you want to be without first taking care of you. Small gestures like sitting in the garden with a cup of tea can make so much difference to how you feel, along with spending time with people you are about, learning about what interests you and choosing to do things that make you feel good. Doesn’t make the chores go away, but you’ve only got one life so make sure you spend it doing what you enjoy.
3) In business, set goals. Be clear on what you want to achieve and add realistic timescales. And don’t be afraid of change, we all need to adjust and sometimes the unexpected can bring the most awesome rewards.
What’s the best piece of advice you could give a new mum?
Don’t compare. There is no need; each child develops at their own pace. And don’t compare yourself to other mums either; you have to do what’s right for you. Parenthood is a huge rollercoaster ride of emotions so be kind to yourself. Trust your instincts as you’ll know your child better than anyone.
Colour can make a real difference to our mood - what’s your favourite colour? And how does it make you feel when you wear it?
Red has always been my favourite colour. It makes me feel invincible. I feel strong and courageous when I wear it, I find it a really positive happy colour.
What’s your favourite activity to do with your family?
My children are all so different and at very different stages in their lives but one thing we do together is play games; card games and board games. That and exploring. I actually love travelling with the kids, especially how it makes you see the world differently through their eyes. We’ll be taking the card games with us when we go off exploring on an epic adventure this summer in Thailand.
What do you like to do for some me-time?
I love the outdoors and where I live now I have the most amazing coastline on my doorstep so I spend a lot of my me-time exploring local beaches or walking the coastpath, often with friends or family. I also started running last year which I found to be a great way to clear my head. But a cup of tea still comes high on my agenda for me-time!
Thanks for sharing your story Andrea. I love your zest for life and positivity. Self-care is so important and your Peachy Packages are the perfect gift or self-treat for anyone! Taking the plunge with ending your successful corporate career to follow your dreams and relocate your family to a totally new area is so inspiring!
