Our "March of Inspiring Mums" interview series celebrates women who are doing some amazing things, whether through business, a campaign or just being fabulous! - hope you enjoy the "March of Inspiring Mums" series!
Our latest interview is with Anna Ceesay. Previously a BBC broadcast journalist, Anna is launching a new magazine, Motherdom, which will aptly be available from Mother's Day. Described as the new mental wellbeing magazine for parents of little ones, it is full of tips, inspiration and a lovely way for parents to take some time out.
Anna is mum to 2 children (aged 6 and 2 years old) and after experiencing low mood and anxiety, coupled with her experience as a journalist, realised that there was no media platform dedicated to parents’ mental wellbeing...so she has set up her own!
Today she shares her tips on managing the juggle of motherhood and work and why, although sometimes tough, we should enjoy the ride as well!
Tell me a little about yourself and how you got into the job you’re now doing?
As well as my most important job (being a mum to my two wonderful kids), I’ve worked as a broadcast journalist for the BBC and have also lead communications teams in two children’s charities. I’m now about to launch Motherdom magazine – which is all about mental wellbeing for parents who have children under 5.
I experienced low mood and anxiety when I was pregnant with my son, just over two years ago. I was very lucky to get the help I needed through the NHS; I had talking therapy until my baby was about six months old. But after I started to feel better, I realised, as a journalist, that there was no media platform dedicated to parents’ mental wellbeing. I started speaking to mums and they told me that this is needed, so I decided to create a space where parents can talk openly about how they’re feeling. It’s taken just over a year to pull it all together and it’s been an amazing journey. I’ve met some incredible people (including Sarah, from Halia Rose!) and am so grateful for all their support.
Every issue of Motherdom has articles from healthcare and wellbeing experts, mumpreneurs, influencers, charity workers, and parents with “live experience” of mental health issues. We also feature lifestyle stuff like mindfulness activities for you and your kids, physical exercises you can do at home and healthy (yet realistic!) recipes. And it’s being backed by some of the country’s leading experts in maternal mental health, who form Motherdom’s Editorial Board.
It’s published quarterly, in print and online. The first issue is officially launching on Mother’s Day (31stMarch).
Tell me one interesting fact about you?
My husband is an actor so occasionally I get to dress up in my glad rags, which I enjoy!
Please can you share 3 tips for managing the juggle of motherhood, life and business?
- Everything takes longer than you think it will, try not to stress about this!
- People have said this to me over and over again – launching a business is incredibly hard work, but remember to enjoy the ride as well.
- WELL DONE YOU! Whatever path you take in life, remember that you’re an amazing mum, woman and human being.
What’s the best piece of advice you could give a new mum?
There’s lots of advice out there – take from it what works for you.
Colour can make a real difference to our mood - what’s your favourite colour? And how does it make you feel when you wear it?
Red – it makes me feel powerful and happy!
What’s your favourite activity to do with your children?
My kids love the cinema (like their parents!) so a real treat is to have a family day out to see the latest kids’ flick.
What do you like to do for some me-time?
I love to shop, dress up, read novels, watch films and travel.
Anna, thank you so much for sharing your story with us. We all have such different experiences of motherhood but to turn your personal difficulties into a positive by helping support other parents and utilising your media platforms to do this is truly inspiring.
I am so incredibly excited to be a part of the launch of Motherdom and wish you the best of success with it too!
