Our "March of Inspiring Mums" interview series celebrates women who are doing some amazing things, whether through business, a campaign or just being fabulous!
Dr Laura David is our latest interviewee. She is a medical doctor, business owner and mum to two young children (aged 4 and 1) plus a weightlifter in her spare time!
Today she shares with us her top tips for juggling motherhood and a working life plus the inspiration behind setting up her health education business, Smart About Health. Here she teaches parents and parents-to-be how to look after their own and their baby’s health by feeling more empowered, confident and prepared.
Laura lives in North London with her family.
Tell me a little about yourself and how you got into the job you’re now doing?
My decision to become a doctor goes way back. My first nursery report apparently said, ‘very good at cutting!’ and after chopping up worms in the garden (I hope no animal rights groups are reading this), and my dad bringing me a little pot of cartilage from his knee operation, the pathway was set in stone.
I took the convoluted training route and became a GP after training as a surgeon. I decided this career suited my life goals better and now I have two children I can work much more flexibly and holistically.
I set up my health education business ‘Smart About Health’ just after I had my second daughter. Parents and patients are always asking me the same things about common health issues. Through my business I teach parents and parents-to-be how to look after their own and their baby’s health and feel more empowered, confident and prepared.
Tell me one interesting fact about you?
I love weight lifting and I can deadlift 125kg!
Please can you share your 3 tips for managing the juggle of motherhood, life and business?
- Use your spare 5 minutes productively
- Delegate tasks / share responsibility as much as possible
- Be with your children when you are with your children and be at work when you are at work.
What’s the best piece of advice you could give a new mum?
It is tough, if you are feeling down or not quite yourself, don’t be a martyr, share your thoughts and feelings and your friends and family will almost certainly help and support you.
Colour can make a real difference to our mood - what’s your favourite colour? And how does it make you feel when you wear it?
I love orange colours, they are bright and make me feel more energised.
What’s your favourite activity to do with your children?
I love reading them books, especially when they cuddle up to me at bed time.
What do you like to do for some me-time?
Most of my me time is spent in the gym...trying to lift heavy weights and be as strong as I used to be 😉
Thank you Laura for sharing your story with us and how you were inspired to set up your business to help even more parents. Your excellent tips are something I think we can all resonate with but sometimes need to remember so it's a perfect reminder!
