March is the month where we celebrate many things including Mother's Day and International Women's Day so I thought it appropriate to feature some inspiring mums and we'll be showcasing them throughout March - hope you enjoy the "March of Inspiring Mums" series!
Today we'll be featuring the lovely Julia Rose Brownlee who has two young children aged 3 and 1 and set up her business, RICIA clothing, a high end occasion wear clothing line for breastfeeding mothers.
1. Tell me a little about yourself and how you got into the job you’re now doing?
I’ve had many different jobs but always wanted a career, which was a dream, seamingly cut short when I had my two children. Not only did they provide me with the hardest and most rewarding job of becoming a mum, but they also exposed me to the gap in the market that was breastfeeding clothing! I came up with the idea for RICIA when I was shopping for my brother’s wedding, and couldn’t find anything elegant and exciting to buy that I could also breastfeed in. So with two babies under the age of two, newly single and in need of an income I decided to start my own company.
Tell me one interesting fact about you?
I am British born but grew up in San Francisco.
Please can you share 3 tips for managing the juggle of motherhood, life and business?
- Don’t be afraid to let your kids see you working. Running my own business means that I never stop, and I often need to answer an email or order while I’m looking after the kids. When they see me on my phone I simply explain to them that I’m working and need a minute, its not going to damage anyone!
- Get help! Whether its nursery, a babysitter, calling on a friend or a family member...whatever! Carve out some alone time without the kids so that you can focus once in a while.
- Running your own business is 24/7 so make sure you’re passionate about your product and willing to make sacrifices / give it your all.
What’s the best piece of advice you could give a new mum?
Don’t let anyone tell you how you should be doing things, go with your gut and everything will be ok.
Colour can make a real difference to our mood - what’s your favourite colour? And how does it make you feel when you wear it?
PINK! Its always been pink, I just can’t get enough. It makes me feel so confident while still being fun and feminine.
What’s your favourite activity to do with your children?
Go to any open outdoor space! Whether its the park, zoo or National Trust property...anywhere we can be let loose and run free is just the best.
What do you like to do for some me-time?
Work! Crazy right? But it's the only time I feel like my independent/productive/old self and I absolutely love my job so its win-win really. Long may it continue!
Julia you are an inspiration with fitting in everything you do with a young family and running a successful business. Thanks for sharing an insight into your world!
