March is the month where we celebrate many things including Mother's Day and International Women's Day so I thought it appropriate to feature some inspiring mums and we'll be showcasing them throughout March - hope you enjoy the "March of Inspiring Mums" series!
Today's interview is with the lovely Lucinda Hutton, a part time lawyer and also the owner of Nurturing Mums, which provides a postnatal support network for new mums that is helpful, non-judgemental and sociable with advice from experienced professionals - something she wanted when she became a mother for the first time.
Lucinda has 2 young children (aged 3 years and 6 months old) and lives in North London.
1. Tell me a little about yourself and how you got into the job you’re now doing?
When I had my baby, I did antenatal classes and made friends but after birth still felt so lost. I was surprised at the lack of practical and non-judgemental postnatal support there was, so put together a course that is helpful and supportive to new parents. My son was unwell, so I decided I couldn’t return to work as a full time lawyer and Nurturing Mums became my new baby.
Tell me one interesting fact about you?
I’m the youngest of 6 children – my parents had 3 boys and 3 girls!
Please can you share 3 tips for managing the juggle of motherhood, life and business?
- Delegate – don’t feel bad about getting a cleaner or asking someone else to do something for you if that’s not your strong point or you could be making better use of your time!
- Separate – try your best to separate work/life if it’s by having a separate office or desk space and trying to limit your work time accordingly so you don’t feel like you’re not able to do it all.
- Stay in lane – it’s so easy, especially with social media, to feel like a failure with work and/or parenting and that you should be doing something different, missed out on an event or are just NOT good. If you are doing the best you can and what’s right for you, I’m pretty sure you are doing something right.
What's the best piece of advice you could give a new mum?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you need to nap / shower / have 5 minutes on your own please don’t feel like you have to do it all – people really want to help so let them.
Colour can make a real difference to our mood - what’s your favourite colour? And how does it make you feel when you wear it?
PINK – the brighter the better. It makes me feel strong, feminine and free.
What’s your favourite activity to do with your family?
When we nap together – it happens very rarely but when it does, it’s magic.
What do you like to do for some me-time?
I have a bath every single day without fail. I close the door, light a candle, pour some delightful bath oil and just soak the day away – it’s good for the soul!
Thanks so much for sharing your story Lucinda. Juggling a family, legal career and also running your own business, which supports other mums, is truly inspirational. I love that you also make time for you every day too.
