March is the month where we celebrate many things including Mother's Day and International Women's Day so I thought it appropriate to feature some inspiring mums and we'll be showcasing them throughout March - hope you enjoy the "March of Inspiring Mums" series!
Today is "Absolutely Incredible Kids Day" so it seemed appropriate to share our recent interview with Susie Lodge (aka WikiMama) who lives in Stony Stratford with her family, including two young children (aged 4 and 2).
While also running a day job four days a week, she is also the Founder of Wikiplacesforkids.com – the trip advisor for parents looking for awesome places to go with their kids – all parent recommended, a shortlist of the very best the UK has to offer.
1. Tell me a little about yourself and how you got into the job you’re now doing?
I’m a time poor mum, always have been, with an ever growing to do list and the constant feeling of underachieving – I realised after having my first child that my London career clashed with my idea of parenting (it took me out the house from 7am to 8pm every day and I couldn’t cope with being so absent or with the commute). So I became hell bent on finding a business idea that would provide, as well as, put me in control of my day. Then, when I was on maternity leave a second time, searching for stuff to do, the idea hit me that parents needed a resource that did all the hard work for them, a list of ONLY parent recommended places to go - from days out to restaurants; a trip advisor style platform but with far less to wade through! So I thought, sod it, I’ll give it a go. With 15 years working in Digital Marketing, I at least had a good base to start from! I’m still balancing the day job with my dream job, and believe the hard work will pay off soon so that finally the much coveted ‘balance’ can be achieved. Tio then, I have to just reach more and more and more parents (…and keep the stress of the day to a minimum, lol!)
Tell me one interesting fact about you?
I have a motorbike licence!! I can say the alphabet backwards and I can speak like Donald Duck!
Please can you share 3 tips for managing the juggle of motherhood, life and business?
- Prioritise! Give yourself a shortlist of 3 or 5 things off the big list that MUST be done - forget the rest until the next list.
- Know that no-one has the perfect life or business, and it actually didn’t come easily for anyone, moving forward at whatever speed is still moving forward, even Beyonce wasn’t built in a day – and actually, you’re killing it.
- Remember the reason you’re doing it the whole time! It helps gain perspective when you’re stressing over Instagram likes during bath time.
What’s the best piece of advice you could give a new mum?
No matter how hard it feels, it's only temporary - you’ve got this! That little human thinks you’re the most incredible person to walk the earth, and guess what, you actually are – look what you made!!
Colour can make a real difference to our mood - what’s your favourite colour? And how does it make you feel when you wear it?
Coral! It makes me feel like summer, pub gardens, relaxed Sundays and prosecco!
What’s your favourite activity to do with your family?
Blimey, with so many wiki days out its hard to choose, but I LOVE places like Bewilderwood! Outdoor activities!! (I also LOVE building Lego! LOL)
What do you like to do for some me-time?
I really want to say something less naff… but that would be fibbing - I’ve got appalling taste in TV, and love nothing more than to chill out with a glass of bubbles and something like Britains Got Talent! IDEAL!!!!!
What a fab idea Susie! I love that Wikiplacesforkids is all parent rated - it's such a great resource for places to go with children especially if you are on holiday, new to an area or want to try something new! You are such an inspiring lady turning an idea into reality whilst managing to juggle a (nearly) full-time job and your two young children. Thanks for sharing your story with us.
Make sure you check out Wikiplacesforkids.com and add your reviews in too so other families can enjoy your favourite places. Also check them out on Facebook or Instagram to see where is hot on the kid hit list!
