March is the month where we celebrate many things including Mother's Day and International Women's Day so I thought it appropriate to feature some inspiring mums and we'll be showcasing them throughout March - hope you enjoy the "March of Inspiring Mums" series!
8th March is International Women's Day so it seemed fitting today to feature a lady I first met half-way across the world when we were both living in Singapore. Talya Stone is an incredibly honest writer and blogger and shares her life and experiences of being a Mum through her blog Motherhood - The Real Deal.
She lives with her family, including 4 year old daughter, in "a little gem of a village called Hampton, not too far away from Hampton Court. There is an amazing community spirit there where I have never experienced anywhere else"
1. Tell me a little about yourself and how you got into the job you’re now doing?
I'm a professional blogger - there I said it! The dirty word haha!
I started the blog back in 2015 on the back of the pure frustration (and of course amazing experience!) I was experiencing throughout my transition to motherhood. I created this platform to get the conversation going on the issues and struggles so many of us mums experience throughout our motherhood journey.
At the time, it was just an outlet and i had no idea about what it would grow into - I've just been ranked number 11 in Feedspot's list of top UK parenting bloggers! - or that it would become something that i would be able to commercialise and run as a business, making enough money so that i didn't have to go back to doing a nine to five. Or that it would take me on to TV and radio either - eek!
Tell me one interesting fact about you?
I can belly dance! Thankfully I have lost the belt otherwise I would probably be in a whole lot of trouble by now.
Please can you share 3 tips for managing the juggle of motherhood, life and business?
- Keep the end goal in mind: for me it’s about being able to have flexible working hours which enable me to work, feel fulfilled and spend quality time with my daughter. It’s jolly hard work having your own business and there’s not really an off button so I always remind myself of this end goal when times are tough or not going as well as I would like
- Time block and be ruthless! The working day goes so fast you have to eke out every single bit of juice you can when you are running your own business. For me time blocking has been a vital part of that. You can read more about time blocking here. On the ruthless part it’s about treating time wasters brutally and that often means a lot of email deleting!
- Meditate daily – for me, this is what helps me keep my s*** together in the endless juggle. I swear I would be in pieces on the floor trying to keep the three ships of motherhood, life and business and float without it. It’s helped me no end. You can read more about how and why I meditate here.
What’s the best piece of advice you could give a new mum?
Don’t let those inner critics be the downfall of you. Remember nobody has a clue what they are doing as new mum, and everyone has their own struggles…no matter how together they look inside they are probably falling apart too!
Colour can make a real difference to our mood - what’s your favourite colour? And how does it make you feel when you wear it?
Yellow – it’s so uplifting. I dare anyone to wear yellow and feel miserable!
What’s your favourite activity to do with your family?
We are quite an active family and love to be anywhere outside enjoying nature…we have a funny ritual whenever we are outdoors together which is to actually go and hug different trees and feel the different energy from them (hippy dippy or what?!). The original treehugger lol!
What do you like to do for some me-time?
Yoga….which is my other life saver. I practice most evenings but my not-so guilty pleasure when I need to reboot is booking myself in for a full day yoga immersion at any of the Tri Yoga studios….I come back feeling new and it lasts for days if not weeks! It’s amazing.
Thanks Talya for sharing your story - your honesty is truly inspirational and refreshing especially in the sometimes overly perfect world of social media!
